The Paul Revere we all know was the oldest son. He went to school at North Writing School and learned the art of gold and silversmithing from his father. When Revere was nineteen (and nearly finished with his apprenticeship) his father died, leaving Revere as the family's main source of income. In the year before the war Revere watched the movements of the British soldiers. Two years later Revere volunteered to fight the French at Lake George, New York, where he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the colonial artillery. A second lieutenant is someone who holds an office in place of an absent superior. He spread word of the Boston Tea Party and took part in The Midnight Ride on April 18th, 1775. The church signaled the riders by lanterns. One if by land, two if by sea. He later died on May 10th, 1818.
